It is distinguished by borders with a pattern that resembles an oblique square and a pallu that features a peacock motif. They got their name from the village of Paithan, which is located in the city of Aurangabad in the Indian state of Maharashtra, where they are weaved by hand. It is one of the most expensive sarees in India due to the fact that it is woven from very fine silk.
